The Government of the Republic of Montenegro founded the Bureau of Metrology on September 14, 2006 and, by its Regulation on the Amendments and Supplements to the Regulation on the Organization and the Method of Operation of the State Administration, it defined the tasks of the Bureau of Metrology relating to "ensuring the application of legal units of measurement; realizing, maintaining and improving measurement standards of the Republic, as well as ensuring their application during international activities; enabling metrology traceability for calibration, testing and controlling laboratories; arranging calibration activities; making assessments of conformity with metrology requirements; giving expert opinions for accrediting the laboratories for verification of measuring instruments; representing the Republic in international and regional metrology organizations, and establishing cooperation with them within the field of metrology; metrological inspection; control of the precious metals articles, as well as other tasks that have been conferred on it as its responsibilities".

The Bureau of Metrology is composed of three sectors (Sector for Cooperation with Regional and International Metrology Organizations, Sector for Metrology Control and Sector for Legal Affairs, Inspection Control and Administrative Procedures) and Office for General Affairs.

The Bureau of Metrology performs the duties of the National Metrology Institute (NMI). The NMI is the institute appointed upon the national resolution to develop and maintain national measurement standards of one or several quantities.

The Bureau of Metrology joined the Associate membership of the EURAMET on July 01, 2007, and, thereafter, the representatives to the following Technical Committees have been appointed, i.e. to the Technical Committee for Electricity and Magnetism (TC - EM); Technical Committee for Interdisciplinary Metrology (TC - IM); Technical Committee for Flow (TC - F); Technical Committee for Mass and Related Quantities (TC - M) and Technical Committee for Quality (TC - Q). In the late November 2007, the Bureau of Metrology became a corresponding member of the International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML).

The Bureau of Metrology and the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB), Braunschweig, namely the National Metrology Institute of Germany, arranged jointly the round table: "Developing strategies for EURAMET integration for the Western Balkan countries and Albania" in Podgorica, July 16 - 18, 2007, in which the representatives form the national metrology institutes of the neighboring countries participated.
