The control of precious metals articles is one of the oldest activities aimed at the protection of consumers. The Law on the Control of Precious Metals Articles (Official Gazette of RM, No. 80/94) provides for the exercise of rights and obligations by all entities and, primarily, by the producers and importers of articles made from precious metals. The Law offers particular protection to the buyers of articles made from precious metals. Pursuant to Article 2 under the Law „jewelry, adornment and other articles made from gold, silver or platinum and / or from alloys of those metals shall be considered as the items made from precious metals”.

Articles made from precious metals may be put on the market or kept exhibited as specimens only if by their composition and purity correspond to the requirements prescribed under the Law. Prior to putting them on the market, the items made from precious metals are subjected to a detailed testing and hallmarking by the Bureau of Metrology.
