Meter Convention

In Paris, 1875, a diplomatic conference on meter was held, where 17 countries in Paris, have signed a treaty, named "Meter Convention". The states parties have decided to found and finance a permanent scientific institute The International Bureau of Weights and Measures (Bureau International des Poids et Measures - BIPM).

BIPM has a role to ensure world-wide uniqueness of measures, to establish and preserve international standards, to conduct comparisons of national and international standards, to ensure coordination in measuring methods, and to conduct and coordinate researches related to physical constants that affect realization of standards.

Every fourth year at the General Conference of Weights and Measures, CGPM, the activities carried out by national metrology institutes and the BIPM are discussed and reviewed. CGPM elects 18 representatives of the International Committee for Weights and Measures, CIPM, meeting every year. CIPM supervises BIPM on behalf of the CGPM and co-operates with other international metrological organizations.
