Montenegro and the Bureau of Metrology, as the National Metrology Institute, were granted a full membership in the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) based in Paris.

By joining the BIPM, Montenegro became 59th member of this organization, which will enable it to participate in making decisions at the highest, global level in the field of metrology. By being granted this status, Montenegro i.e. the Bureau of Metrology will be able to participate and vote at the meetings of the General Conference on Weights and Measures (CGPM), exercise the right to realization of internationally recognized measurement uncertainty through calibration services provided by the BIPM at no additional cost as well as to participate in international comparisons of national measurement standards.
In August 2011, the Bureau of Metrology became an associate member of the General Conference on Weights and Measures (CGPM), which consists of representatives of all the signatories of the "Metre Convention". Thanks to its previous status of an associate member, the Bureau of Metrology had published 23 internationally recognized calibration and measurement capabilities (CMC) in the official database of the BIPM in the field of thermometry, volume and length.
As a result of the efforts devoted by the Bureau of Metrology, Montenegro is now able to demonstrate its metrological capabilities to other National Metrology Institutes across the world, which has contributed to the reduction of technical barriers to trade and provided a support to the Montenegrin economy.
A diplomatic conference on the meter, held in 1875 in Paris, at which representatives of 17 states signed the “Metre Convention”, is a key document of the contemporary metric system based on the application of the International System of Units (SI). The Convention established the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM), which aims to provide a uniform system of international units of measurement in the world. Furthermore, BIPM is responsible for establishing and preserving international measurement standards and ensuring coordination of measurement methods in research with regard to the physical constants.
