Elementary School Students from Bijela win „Why are Measurements Important?“ Quiz

On 10 October 2018, as part of the „Open Days of Science 2018“, the Bureau of Metrology organized a knowledge quiz under the title „Why are measurements important?“ for sixth-grade students of elementary schools.

EThe team from the elementary school „Orjenski bataljon" from Bijela won the first place. The team was composed of the following members: Natalija Smoljan, Miloš Gligović, and Danilo Đukanović. The second-ranked team members were Miljana Nakić, Marko Šuković, and Matej Tošić from elementary school „Sutjeska“ from Podgorica. The team from „Maksim Gorki“ elementary school from Podgorica, namely Una Gluščević, Jovan Janković, and Nikola Vidić, won the third place.

 

Elementary school „Braća Labudović“ from Nikšić won the fourth place. The team was made up of Teodora Džaković, Darko Perović, and Jovan Strunjaš.

The toal of 27 students from nine elementary schools paticipated in the knowledge quiz, as follows: „Maksim Gorki”, „21. maj”, „Štampar Makarije”, „Vlado Milić”, „Savo Pejanović”, „Sutjeska” and “Vladimir Nazor” from Podgorica, „Orjenski bataljon” from Bijela and „Braća Labudović” from Nikšić.

The quiz was organized under the auspices of the Ministry of Science. The three best-ranking teams won valuable awards including bicycles, tablet computers, wireless headphones.

The quiz took place at the premises of the elementary school “21. maj” from Podgorica.

The goal of the quiz was to additionally acquaint elementary school students with key concepts of math and natural and social sciences, as well to provide the students with an opportunity to further expand their knowledge in these fields. In addition, a group of questions in this quiz will be related to metrology as well, emphasizing the importance of measurements in everyday life.

One of the main reasons for organizing the quiz is the ongoing campaign by the international metrology community aimed at marking one of the most significant changes to the International System of Units (SI) since its establishment, which is expected in November 2018. Bearing in mind the big change to the International System of Units, organizing a knowledge quiz for elementary school students is just another in the range of activities aimed at raising awareness of the system of units and introducing the public to the forthcoming changes in the field of science.
